The Demise of School Libraries

A Nation Without School Librarians

This map developed in March 2010, illustrates the number of school districts within the U.S. that have eliminated their certified school librarian positions. Despite documented research that indicates the value of a certified school librarian to the academic achievement of students at all levels, the insanity continues in 2013.

I was very surprised when I looked at the above map and table. I can't believe that there are so many school districts in the United States without a librarian in the campus and that so many school teacher-librarian positions in California state were eliminated in the last ten years.

How does this happen? Harold N. Boyer blamed the librarians who embraced of every technology that comes down the road (Who's to Blame for the Demise of Libraries? l Feedback) but I do not agree with him. On the contrary, I support the librarians who learn the new technologies and apply them in the library field immediately and I think that is the only way to save the school libraries.

  1. Wow! That is an impressive graphic. Sad, as well. What an interesting article you found as well. I think I would have to agree with you, librarians should learn all that there is to know about any technology, are we not the bearers of information? Helping it to flow freely through out the community?
Plus who else is going to get the kids ready for the technology they will find out int he real world? I'm not so sure the teachers have the time ( and some of them the knowledge ) to do it.
